چکیده

Introduction: The Thermal “and” Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) instrument scheduled to fly onboard the 2007 Mars Phoenix Scout Mission will perform differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and evolved gas analysis (EGA) of soil samples and ice collected from the surface and subsurface at a northern landing site on Mars. We have been developing a sample characterization data library using a laboratory DSC integrated with a quadrupole mass spectrometer to support the interpretations of TEGA data returned during the mission. The laboratory TEGA test-bed instrument has been modified to operate under conditions similar to TEGA, i.e., reduced pressure (e.g., 100 torr) and reduced carrier gas flow rates [1,2]. We have previously developed a TEGA data library for a variety of volatile-bearing mineral phases, including Fe-oxyhydroxides, phyllosilicates, carbonates, and sulfates [1]. Here we examine the thermal and evolved gas properties of samples that contain organics. One of the primary objectives of the Phoenix Scout Mission is to search for habitable zones by assessing organic or biologically interesting materials in icy soil. Nitrogen is currently the carrier gas that will be used for TEGA. In this study, we examine two possible modes of detecting organics in geologic samples; i.e., pyrolysis using N2 as the carrier gas and combustion using O2 as the carrier gas.

Thermal and Evolved Gas Behavior of Calcite under Mars Phoenix Tega

Introduction: The Mars Phoenix Scout Mission with its diverse instrument suite successfully examined several soils on the Northern plains of Mars. The Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) was employed to detect organic and inorganic materials by coupling a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) with a magnetic-sector mass spectrometer (MS). Martian soil was heated up to 1000°C in the DSC ov...

POLAR MARS BIOHABITABILITY ASSESSMENT OF THE WET CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS ON THE 2007 PHOENIX MARS SCOUT MISSION. S.M.M.Young,

Introduction: The 2007 Phoenix Mars Scout lander launched on 4 August 2007 and landed on 25 May 2009 at the northern polar latitude of 68.22°N, and longitude 234.25°E (areocentric) [1]. The landing site was a field of sand wedge polygonal terrain [2,3]. For 152 sols the mission made extensive atmospheric and ground measurements. Analyses included interacting with and excavating the Mars regolit...

Thermal and Evolved Gas Analysis of Magnesium Perchlorate: Implications for Perchlorates in Soils at the Mars Phoenix Landing Site

Introduction: Perchlorate salts were discovered in the soils around the Phoenix landing site on the northern plains of Mars [1]. Perchlorate was detected by an ion selective electrode that is part of the MECA Wet Chemistry Laboratory (WCL). The discovery of a mass 32 fragment (likely O2) by the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer (TEGA) provided additional confirmation of a strong oxidizer in the ...

Multi-scale Variability in the Ice-table Depth at Potential Phoenix Landing

Introduction: A major objective of the Mars Scout mission, Phoenix, is to characterize the present state of water in the martian environment, at a location where water may play a significant role in the present and past habitability of Mars [1]. Given the generally dry and cold climate of Mars today, any substantial amount of water is expected to occur in the form of ground ice within the regol...

Mitigation of the impact of terrestrial contamination on organic measurements from the Mars Science Laboratory.

The objective of the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), which is planned to follow the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Phoenix lander to the surface of Mars, is to explore and assess quantitatively a site on Mars as a potential habitat for present or past life. Specific goals include an assessment of the past or present biological potential of the target environment and a characterization of i...
